Hair Extensions: The Do's And Dont's Of At-Home Maintenance

Vanity Salon is the premier destination for hair extensions in The Woodlands, Texas. We offer a variety of services to help you maintain your extensions and keep them looking their best. We spoke with the owner, Amber Wagner to discuss her best tips and tricks to keeping your extensions looking extra fresh.

In this article, we will share some of our top tips for at-home extension maintenance. We will also provide a list of dos and don’ts to help you avoid damaging your extensions.

Extensions are a great way to add length, volume, and color to your hair. They are also a convenient option for those who do not have the time or patience to grow their hair out. However, extensions require some special care and maintenance in order to keep them looking their best.

The Do's of Hair Extensions

When caring for hair extensions, the most important thing to remember is to be gentle. Treat them like you would treat your natural hair, and make sure to use the right products. Take care by avoiding using too high of heat, as this can damage the hair. Instead, try using specific thermal protectors for extensions like the Jack Winn Bam Humidity Armor on a lower heat to ensure that the extensions don’t dry out or become brittle. Also be sure to brush your extensions twice a day to keep them from tangling. Start from the ends and work your way up to the root to avoid damaging the hair. Using a leave-in conditioner can also help to keep the extensions moisturized and prevent them from becoming dry and brittle. As far as hair washing, make sure you shampoo your hair every 2-3 days at the longest because the natural hair oils can cause slippage of the extension bonds. Make sure to keep the extensions away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures to prevent them from drying out or becoming damaged.

The Don'ts of Hair Extensions

While taking care of your hair extensions it is important to know what not to do. First, avoid using styling products that contain alcohol as this can dry out and damage the hair. Additionally, be sure to avoid over-washing your hair as this can strip the hair of its natural oils and leave it feeling dry and brittle. You should also avoid sleeping with wet extensions, as this can cause them to become tangled and knotted. Avoid putting your hair into tight updos such as a tight high ponytail. On the note of putting your hair up, never use regular rubber bands or pins on your extensions as this can cause breakage and can lead to hair loss.

Proper Maintenance is Key

It’s important to properly maintain your extensions in order to keep them looking their best. This includes taking proper care of your scalp as well. Make sure to avoid scratching or irritating the area, as this can lead to inflammation and can cause damage to the hair. Keep the area clean by gently cleansing it with a mild shampoo every 2-3 days MAX. Avoid the use of styling products or oils that can weigh down the extensions and make them appear dull and lifeless. Additionally, make sure that any conditioners or oils that you do use do NOT touch the bonds because it will cause slippage. Following these steps ensure beautiful, long-lasting hair extensions that stay soft, smooth, and healthy.

Regular maintenance and proper care are essential to ensure that your extensions look their best. We also recommend coming in for touch-up appointments every 10-12 weeks as this will help to maintain the shape of your extensions and keep the color fresh, but letting your extensions grow any longer than this will give you matting as well as hair thinning or even loss. When to know it's time to come back to touch up your extensions: If you notice that your extensions are starting to feel dry or brittle, fading in color, or any visible signs of damage, it’s time to come in for a touch-up appointment. At Vanity Salon, our stylists can provide a thorough assessment of your extensions and recommend any necessary treatments. We also provide a variety of services to help keep your extensions looking their best and to keep them healthy for a longer period of time.
